The Palenque Ballcourt, Location: Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico

In Palenque's urban scheme the ball court enjoyed a high status because of its deep symbolic and religious sense that its ceremonial game had. Its practice represented the everyday play between contradictory forces, antagonistic concepts and opposing natural events. Large slabs of stone were probably once carved with glyphs. These slabs served as the facing for the slopping midsection of the platform. The stone rings typical of such buildings are not found here; presumably wooden rings were used instead.
